DuckDuckGo is a unique name and usually refers to the internet search engine. We’re answering some of the questions we’ve come across about DuckDuckGo and what it is.

What is DuckDuckGo?

DuckDuckGo is a search engine that emphasizes not tracking its users, like most major search engines. This search engine does not maintain data profiles about its users and minimizing the “filter bubble effect“.

DuckDuckGo aims to make the internet “less creepy” and make it easier to achieve privacy online.

Gabriel Weinberg founded DuckDuckGo in 2008. It has seen substantial growth in recent years and currently processes around 1.3 billion searches every month. DuckDuckGo was not a private search engine, to begin with, but made the move in March 2010.

“We are the Internet privacy company that lets you take control of your information, without any tradeoffs.”

Difference Between DuckDuckGo and Google

DuckDuckGo and Google are both search engines, so they work in similar ways. DuckDuckGo is different because it gets its search results from different sources than Google, and does not track your searches. DuckDuckGo also offers more privacy for its users because it doesn’t track your searches as Google does.

No Tracking: Most search engines collect your search history and use it to “customize” the results and the ads you see. This means that with other search engines, they know which content you are interested in and which ads you’re likely to click. DuckDuckGo takes an alternative approach because it believes there is more value in privacy than more relevant ads.

Avoid Filter Bubbles: Search engines that track you change your search results so that you’re more likely to get results that you’re interested in. While this can feel like a convenient feature, it actually results in biased search results and incomplete information. Since DuckDuckGo doesn’t track your searches, it doesn’t have data to influence which results you see.

What is DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials?

DuckDuckGo’s Privacy Essentials is a mobile app and browser add-on for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. It helps protect your privacy by blocking trackers on the sites you visit, taking you to encrypted versions of these sites, and exposes websites with poor privacy protection.

With this add-on installed, DuckDuckGo will be set as your default search engine. This makes private search more convenient. The extension also assigns “Privacy Grades”, which shows websites’ levels of privacy protection.

DuckDuckGo’s Privacy Essentials is DuckDuckGo’s first move into becoming more of a privacy company and not just a search engine.
